Winter Watercolors

Sleigh Ralley, Stockbridge

Seeing the frost on top of Mt. Greylock reminded me that its time to update this site with some winter art news. I am NOT exhibiting in any holiday shows this year…needed to take a little break but expect to be back in the “circuit” next year. But my art is still around and available. I am working from my home studio now, and am very easily reached, so do not hesitate to contact me.

Here is where you can see my work at any time:

Mary’s Carrot Cake Shop and Gallery, Union St., Pittsfield – exhibiting Berkshire winter framed originals and reproductions until January. Also many “specially priced for the holiday season” unframed repros in the bin and Christmas on Park Square Holiday Globes. Open Tues – Fri, 11 – 2pm or by appointment (contact me). I will be there 5-8pm for a little reception on Dec 4 for  Pittsfield First Fridays Arts Walk. Come by and visit!

You may also find a selection of matted repros and cards at the following:
Lenox Print and Mercantile, Church Street, Lenox;  Red Lion Inn Gift Shop, Stockbridge; St. Francis Gallery, Rt. 102 in South Lee.
There is also a selection of winter Berkshire scenes on display in the public areas on floors 1 and 2 of the Crowne Plaza in Pittsfield.

Pittsfield Parade Poster 2015

2015

2015 Poster -low res

It has been an honor to be the official artist for the Pittsfield Parade Poster since 2012. The poster is given as a gift to anyone who donates $25 or more to support the parade.  And really, WHO DOESN’T LOVE A PARADE????
Contribute through the website PittsfieldParade.com to receive your poster, or you can contribute through me if you would like it signed…just contact me directly and pick one up at my studio on North Street. Besides the current year’s poster (for a $25 donation),  previous years’ posters (2012, 2013, 2014) can also be purchased for $10 each while supplies last.

I have been often asked to explain the process of designing and creating the poster.

THE PROCESS
Early each year a theme is decided upon by the Pittsfield Parade Committee; shortly afterwards, it is communicated to me.  My guidelines are:  it must be vertical orientation, conform to  18″ x 24″ dimensions, and always display the American flag.  Some themes can be very challenging, often quite educational, and always great fun! The process varies depending on how I want to depict the theme.

Movie Classics  in 2012, was my first, and so far has been the most complicated. I wanted to create something that would appeal to everyone. Besides all the research needed to find suitable movie icons for each genre and age group, it required a lot of thought on how to put it all together. At first I wanted to have all those movie icons marching in the parade, but that became a drawing nightmare. Then I thought it would be fun to have them all watching the parade go by while standing in front of the old Palace Theater on North Street. Once that was decided, I then had to determine who goes, who stays (I found a lot more than I could use). Each character was then hand-drawn individually by me, and scanned into a graphic design progam. In addition, the Palace Theater was hand drawn as well. Once I had all of the pieces in the program, I could move them all around until I found a pleasing arrangement. Once done, I then printed that out in a size even larger than the  poster would be, but the correct proportions, and used that printout to transfer the images and design onto my watercolor paper. I fine-tuned as I painted and ending up with a very large painting (framed and hanging in my studio). Using the magic of computer programs, it was scanned and shrunk, and put into a poster format with the title, date and Pittsfield Parade information.

The posters for 2013 and 2014 were done using a different process than above. Each of the themes:  Land that I Love (2013) and  Made in America (2014),  required multiple unique images. All items depicted on these posters were individually painted as smaller watercolors and then scanned in to a design program. Putting the posters together was fun. With Land that I Love, I tried to have the images in the borders correspond to where they would fall geographically in the US…with a folk art flag and red barn in the center symbolizing the heartland.  Made in America has products created in America and located as close to the area on the map of the UAS as possible.

The image for the 2015 theme, Celebrating our Independence, seemed to come to me very quickly. I could not imagine anything but a painting of the Minute Man sculpture done by Berkshires’ own Daniel Chester French, at night surrounded by fireworks. After viewing as many different versions of the statue as I could find, I did a drawing and then painted the scene as a single large image with the flag in border.

Travels with Missie – the Artists’ View

Postcard-front-low-res

Introduction

Sometimes a vacation turns into something so much more.  Last May, a group of about 50 mostly Berkshire County folks visited Ireland with Kevin O’Hara, author of “Last of the Donkey Pilgrims”. No one knew that there were 4 artists in the group.  Only two were acquainted with each other, but soon after arriving at their destination, they all met and as artists will do, discussed the stunning paintings they all hoped to create once they returned home.  And that is how the “Travels with Missie – the Artists’ View” was conceived.

Press Release

Pittsfield, MA,   February 15, 2015  —   An art show featuring dozens of new works inspired by contemporary Berkshires writer Kevin O’Hara opens on Saturday March 14 at the St. Francis Gallery in South Lee, Mass. “Travels with Missie – the Artists’ View” presents paintings by four artists from Berkshire County: Marguerite Bride, Susan Edwards, David King, and Scott Taylor, who traveled to Ireland in May 2014. The artists were among some 50 travelers who followed the magical trail set by O’Hara in his 1979 journey with Missie the donkey, as documented in his book “Last of the Donkey Pilgrims”.

Their memories and views are captured in their paintings, all to be seen for the first time in this exhibit, on display March 14 – April 12. As the historical basis for the 2014 itinerary, some of O’Hara’s photographs and memorabilia from the trek in 1979 will also be on display.

A festive opening reception will be held at the gallery on Saturday March 14 from 2 – 6pm complete with Irish refreshments and music. In addition, during the opening, O’Hara will read from his book and share some stories of his adventures with Missie –and also with the artists last May.  A stunning carving of the donkey by Susan Edwards, which will become part of the Berkshire Carousel, will be present, as will a life-size straw effigy of Missie the Donkey created by  Mike Melle of Plainfield.

There probably could not be a more different group of artists displaying their work in this exhibit, which will feature many different sizes, styles and mediums, from watercolors to oils to acrylics, plus sculpture and photography.  There will be approximately 25-30 Irish-themed original works by these 5 artists on display during this exhibit. There will also be a limited number of fine art reproductions of the artists’ pieces available.

Marguerite Bride, a Berkshire resident for the past 20 years, paints primarily in watercolor, but with a twist. Many of her pieces are watercolor on canvas, quite different from her usual paintings on paper, (although there will be some of those too). A lover of all things architectural, you will see buildings and bicycles, and maybe a sheep or two.  Bride has a studio on North Street in Pittsfield.

A resident of Windsor for 42 years, Susan Edwards, who is “semi-retired”,  is a Fine Artist and Graphic Designer who worked in the publishing and printing fields for 20 years and presently creates art from Windrush Studio located at her home. Edwards began her career in Boston as a commercial art student at Butera School of Art. Her mediums include oil, pastel, watercolor, and acrylic with a concentration in oil and pastel. Edwards is also the designer and carver of the Missie carousel donkey that will be on display at the gallery.

David King, a Pittsfield resident, has been painting in both oils and watercolors as a hobby for over 40 years. David majored in Fine Arts at Berkshire Community College for two and a half years but changed careers after completing four and a half years of service in the Air Force. He currently works for Guardian Life Insurance but spends much of his free time painting. He is one of the contributing artists of the Berkshire Carousel. A student of the Gloria Malcolm Arnold studio, expect to see stunning detail and vivid color in his depiction of Ireland.

A lifelong Pittsfield resident, Scott Taylor paints in acrylic with vivid colors bringing emotion and contemplation to his paintings. “The landscape and old structures of the Emerald Isle provided me with more than enough creative opportunities for this show. The difficulty came when selecting just what to include. I could paint Ireland ‘til my dying days and still have leftovers! “

The artists painted their works without the influence of one another which makes it a varied and personal show. In addition to their own personal scenes, each artist painted one scene based upon a specific scene that Kevin O’Hara provided, and which he will discuss at the opening.

St. Francis Gallery is located on Rt 102, in South Lee just 2 miles east from the Red Lion Inn. Gallery hours:  Friday through Monday 10am – 5 pm.
