Phil Woods, arguably the best-known disciple of Charlie Bird Parker, was a native of Springfield, Mass, and appeared in the Berkshires three times in the last decade of his life. Declared an NEA Jazz Master on the eve of this Pittsfield CityJazz Festival appearance in 2006, Phil was an inspired and inspiring performer. The multiple Grammy winner, who always appeared wearing his iconic leather fishing cap, died in September, 2015, just three weeks after his final gig.
Inspiration: While I have seen Phil perform many times, this painting was inspired by a photograph taken by Lee Everett at the 2006 Pittsfield CityJazz Festival.
